CLAIM THAT “TAX AND SPEND LIBERAL” LABEL WITH PRIDE!

Supposedly penny pinching right wing “conservatives” have used the phrase “tax and spend liberal” as a slur and accusation, suggesting that progressive politicians steal excessive amounts of hard earned money from citizens and spend it wastefully. The facts, however, reveal a very different reality.

We, as a nation, decided a long time ago that we would all be better off if the citizens in our democracy were literate and educated. Public education, purchased by all of us, was deemed the best way to prepare Americans to fulfill their responsibilities as owners of a democracy. Informed, thinking people are required for us to be self-governing, which is what democracy is supposed to mean. The low “group rate” we enjoy for the education of our young is a much better deal than we could ever get if we had to provide education for our children individually, kind of like group health insurance rates. Many people would go without education, just as many go without health care in our current system of private health care (100,000 Americans die each year from no health insurance.) Without mass education our society would be very different. We would be backward, economically sluggish, and (more) vulnerable to dangerous political opportunists. Some can get by without medical care because they do not get sick, but we all need education. There are countries today where there is no public education, or there is some, but parents have to pay. This circumstance insures that the poor stay poor because parents of little means cannot afford the fees so their children are left behind, becoming a permanent underclass.

What would it cost to have a parent stay home full time to educate the children, or to hire teachers for each family? What about parents whose expertise does not extend to all the knowledge a young person needs; how many parents could train their kids in physics, art, chemistry, trigonometry, literature, writing, business, biology, shop class, or the latest computer programs? The education “group rate” is an enormous bargain and a tremendous efficiency. We achieve the same efficiencies in public infrastructure. Imagine what sort of roads we would have if each of us was responsible for the street in front of our home. Our interstate highways are the arteries carrying the lifeblood of commerce. Afghanistan or Tanzania are examples of the economic price of dysfunctional, low tax governments. Dangerous, pitted dirt roads, and bridges that wash out with heavy rain, inability to reliably get from one point to another- that is the price of “every man for himself, get government off our backs.”

We have chosen, as a group, to utilize the efficiencies of group purchasing to defend our borders, to have police and fire protection, to have free public libraries and fundamental research. We have group funded space exploration, and group funded watchdogs so that our food is safe to eat, and our neighbors cannot freely poison our wells. People are not free to build a strip-joint next to the grade school, packs of feral dogs don’t roam the streets, charlatans can’t rip us off with snake oil, and manufacturers have to tell us what we are buying and safety test it first. The internet operates on an orderly system, established by our group tool, our government. The drivers on the road with us have passed a driving and vision test. Our elderly, disabled, or orphaned do not starve to death. The streets are not crowded with abandoned children, pickpockets and beggars. We have not solved all our problems, but through our collective tool we are working toward the most efficient, cost effective ways to address the needs that are not easy or cost effective to address individually.

If there was a child molester or rapist in your neighborhood, would you prefer to have an established justice system investigate, arrest, and incarcerate that person? What if you were falsely accused? Would you prefer a vigilante justice system, an accountable, group-owned, professional law establishment? The bottom line is: you get what you pay for, and many things vital to life are cheaper and better with the group discount.

Public utilities are nonprofits. They don’t siphon off part of our fees to pay multimillion dollar salaries to CEO’s or dividends to stockholders. Their reason to exist is to deliver the best possible service, while privately owned, for-profit utilities exist to deliver maximum profits to investors. Group purchasing power by government is for the most part a spectacular savings for citizens. We get screwed when greed motivated entities are allowed to get to government decision-makers and warp their priorities through campaign cash. Lefty, liberal government spending priorities actually save Americans money in the long run. Safety net spending on health care, unemployment, family planning, and food stamps, are just a few of the public investments that pay back dividends in excess of what the public spends. The people crying to get government “off their backs” are those who want unfettered ability to trespass upon the rights of others, and the dupes who have bought into the lie that less government, less use of our collective tool will somehow increase personal well being. This article tells about a corporation that made three billion dollars, paid no taxes, and even took millions from our government, crying to congress about the terrible burden of corporate taxes Corning hypocrisy

The tax and spend accusation aimed at Democrats and liberals is bogus too because the record shows that Republican administrations have run up vastly greater public debt (over 70%) than Democratic administrations National Debt under GOP.

Government is no more and no less than the tool we use as a group to do those things we cannot do efficiently or at all as individuals. We have chosen to jointly pave our roads, build bridges and sewers and water systems, protect against fire, invading armies, and criminals. We jointly fund education, basic research, environmental protection, public parks, and support for the needy. We would not be a great nation if we did not join together to perform these functions. Those who demonize all government would throw out the functional with the dysfunctional. Governments can get out of control and do evil, and ours has done much that is counterproductive or unsavory. Political leaders have sold out to greedy corporate influence and waged unjust imperial wars. This does not mean we should do nothing jointly. It means we should keep a very close eye on those we invest with power to serve us, and we should have swift and robust means to adjust when something goes awry. An active and vigilant free press must keep us informed and citizens must all pay attention and participate in the running of the country.

PATRIARCHY & SEXISM EXPLAINED

I have a theory. I have long pondered how to explain and counter the obscenely sexist cultures that claim innate superiority of males. These cultures, you know who you are, claim that males are intellectually, spiritually, physically and morally superior to females. They hold that nature or God designed the hierarchy with males at the top, as evidenced by the universal dominance of males. If women were supposed to have rights, why is patriarchal dominance the norm around the world?

Confucius is reported to have said “One hundred females are not worth one testicle."
Different cultures act upon this belief in varying degrees by controlling, repressing, discriminating against, murdering, raping, usurping, demeaning, neglecting and generally abusing the rights of females in every imaginable way. The worst of the offenders baldly excuse these acts with a claim that this is just the way it is, women must undergo clitorectomy to be controlled, men are paid more because they are worth more, girls don’t need education, sons are more valuable so female infanticide is warranted, it’s the natural order, or maybe God’s holy mandate. Women, due to their inferior judgment, morals and intelligence, must always be ruled by men. Women exist to serve the needs of men. That’s the way it is; that’s the way it has always been, and trying to change it would be a perversion of nature.

I don’t buy it.

There is, however, truth to the claim that patriarchal domination is pervasive, and that it has been for a very long time. I resolutely reject, however, that it is a divine mandate, or that it will always be so. My theory to explain pervasive sexism is that humans are evolving as a species in a way that parallels the evolution of an individual. Males are mostly bigger and stronger physically than females, so males have generally used their testosterone driven size and aggressiveness to usurp whatever they can from women, and like any smart oppressor, they have used their big brains to try and rationalize it (oppression is a lot easier if you can get the oppressed to buy into the arrangement.)

If you hand a chocolate bar to a two year old, another toddler who has none and wants it may well grab it away- if she can. Before we develop a moral sense, and compassion for those around us, “might makes right” appears to be the default paradigm. Young humans eventually learn to feel the needs of those around them. Most of us learn to share in the preschool years and we begin to grasp altruism around the age of seven. Young humans can still be selfish and inconsiderate, but most move rapidly toward being socially responsible and compassionate beings by the time they hit puberty.
While we are still a shockingly violent species (WHO Violence Report ), I see many hopeful signs of the human race approaching a new consciousness of and respect for the rights of others. The League of Nations, the United Nations, and the World Court are all examples of human attempts to replace “might makes right” with just, rational and nonviolent means of resolving conflicts. The U.S., of late, is firmly in the camp of “might makes right”- the military muscle gets to call the shots (eat the chocolate), but I see glimmers of enlightenment sprouting up all over the place. It is only a matter of time till we reach that level of maturity where threatening, brutalizing or killing people to get what we want will be looked upon as the shameful, shocking, amoral crudity that it is. I place humankind at the cusp of puberty, and I just hope I live long enough to see us move solidly into the next phase, zits, braces, painful crushes and all.

LET TEXAS SECEDE- PLEASE!

Texas Governor Rick Perry suggested a while back that if the federal government doesn’t change it’s ways, Texas might have to secede from the Union and become an independent country. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/18/us/politics/18texas.html

It happens that Texas sucks more federal revenues than Texans pay in federal taxes, so I say, let them secede, please

Abby Zimet published a commentary on The Republican Party of Texas’ platform on Common Dreams: http://www.commondreams.org/further/2012/07/02
“Texas GOP: Yes to Hitting Kids and Discriminating, No to Voting Rights, Thinking, the Dune Sage Brush Lizard and the Gays
Opting to ignore reality as most of us know it, the newly released, truly astonishing Republican Party of Texas’ platform opposes "all efforts of the extreme environmental groups that stymie legitimate business interests," calls for abolishing the Voting Rights Act and EPA, rejects affirmative action as making race "a divisive force in American life," declares that homosexuality "tears at the fabric of society" and defines marriage as "a God-ordained, legal and moral commitment only between a natural man and a natural woman," AND opposes "the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority." Later, a  spokesman said the critical thinking part was actually "an oversight," so go ahead and think if you want, but obviously not homo thoughts.

And this from the New York Times on Texas' deep concern for the health care of citizens ("Let them sick poor kids die off- don't need em!")

“A quarter of the residents of Texas, 6.3 million people, are uninsured, by far the highest percentage in the country. (That number includes more than a million children.) Texas ranks last in prenatal care and finished last on a new federal assessment of overall health quality that examined factors like disease prevention, deaths from illnesses, and cancer treatment.
Yet Gov. Rick Perry — strangely puffed up as he was so often in his presidential bid — recently told the Obama administration that he would proudly refuse a huge infusion of Medicaid money that would significantly reduce those shameful statistics and cover 1.7 million more people. The same indifference to suffering that pushed Texas to the bottom is now threatening to keep it there.” Source: NYT on Texas

So, I’m thinking Texas should secede, or maybe even be kicked out of the Union, and all the sane, rational, caring people can pick up and move across the border to the U.S. And if we are really lucky, all the social Darwinist conservatives and libertarian wackos from other states will flock to the new right wing paradise. Texas is the second largest state geographically- there is plenty of room for them all. Sounds like a win-win to me.

Of course, after a bit, it may become untenable for most of the residents, but that will be a matter for the State Department to deal with, won't it?  http://www.alternet.org/teaparty/149332/secession!_what_would_it_look_like_if_red_states_formed_their_own_country/

IS U.S. BUSINESS INTEGRITY SLIPPING OR GROWING, OVERALL?

I wonder at times if American business culture has less integrity than it used to, or if we just hear about the sleaze more than we used to. There used to be snake oil sales people, and now we have the FDA and Consumer Protection Agency (let’s not even look at Wall Street, the big banks, Congress, etc.) Are we a better society than we used to be, or are we losing ground? This musing was kicked off by my deodorant. Twenty some years ago I discovered mineral salt deodorant. It was a simple round rock of clear mineral salts from France that you rub on your clean wet underarm. It worked spectacularly, for several days with one application even. This rock had no carcinogens, no endocrine disruptors or other nasty chemicals, and no plastic packaging to send to the landfill; and one $10 rock lasted me for years. A couple years back, tragically, it stopped working for me. I suppose the bacteria on my skin evolved immunity to the mineral salts. Even when I had the salt, I also had stick deodorant for when I was in a hurry and wanted a perfumed underarm touch-up that didn’t require freshly cleaned, wet armpits.

A while back I also discovered the EWG website, Skindeep www.ewg.org/skindeep , where anyone can look up personal care products, which are safety rated on a scale of 1 to 10. It’s an eye opener. Antiperspirants, and a lot of the stuff we put on our bodies, contain all sorts of toxins, (and thanks mostly to our privately funded, legal bribery, campaign finance system, this is still perfectly legal.) I noticed on Skindeep that one of the most toxic ingredients is the artificial perfume in products. I started using unscented laundry detergent and dryer softener after that. I tried all the naturally scented health food store deodorants too, and they feel great and smell nice, but none of them work for me (I stink after a bit.) So now I mostly use nothing and I wash more often.

Back to the pits. I was in the store yesterday and wanted a scented antiperspirant deodorant for occasional emergency use, so I sniffed the myriad scents of Dove brand stick antiperspirant (my current favorite.) I picked one with a very minimal scent, thinking less perfume may mean fewer toxins. It’s a new variety and not in EWG’s data base yet. I read the ingredient list on the package this morning and noticed that the front of the package proudly proclaims: NEW UNIQUE FORMULA with calendula and sunflower seed extracts. So then I looked at the fine print ingredient list, which one must peel off the top layer of the label to see. Ingredients on packaging are listed in order of volume, from greatest to least. The sunflower oil in this antiperspirant is way down near the preservative, BHT (a toxin), and calendula extract is last on the list, even though it is first in their NEW UNIQUE FORMULA text atop the front label.

This revelation makes me wonder- do they think no one reads labels? Do they think we are stupid? Are we stupid? The balls that would proudly tout NEW ingredients that are barely present in the product! It made me shake my head in disgust. The snake oil folks are alive and prospering, it seems.

I saw a lollipop display in the store emblazoned all over with bold lettering: A FAT FREE FOOD
(Refined sugar is more readily converted to fat on our bodies than dietary fat)

New York City recently banned deadly trans fat in food sold there, and most foods in the grocery are now free of the nasty stuff- but the Girl Scout Cookies I bought this year still used it!

Fifteen percent of worker pay is reportedly stolen by bosses, and wage and hour violation claims are up 400% over the last 11 years http://www.alternet.org/story/155710/wage_theft_epidemic%3A_bosses_pocket_15_percent_of_workers%27_pay

It makes me wonder: do the other things we have recently gained as a society outweigh the latest abuses by the greedy, integrity-challenged, and power-crazed?

Racism and sexism have been driven under the table, mostly. Cops who attack peaceful citizens sometimes get to star in infamy on YouTube  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irVlwb8a3TU&feature=related

Bull$%#@ from politicians gets lampooned in prime time by Jon Stewart www.thedailyshow.com  and Rachel Maddow www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/ns/msnbc_tv-rachel_maddow_show
But, are we as a nation, as a species, improving ethically, overall? Is integrity in business backsliding or growing? Alas, my antiperspirant votes no.

Being an idealist can be really hard.
